Affective and Enjoyment Responses to Short-Term High-Intensity Interval Training with Low-Carbohydrate Diet in Overweight Young Women

Question

How do affective and enjoyment responses to very brief all-out cycling HIIT compare with moderate-intensity continuous cycling during a 4-week low-carbohydrate diet in overweight young women?

Summary

This randomized 4-week trial studied 43 overweight young women completing a low-carbohydrate diet alone, low-carbohydrate diet plus very brief all-out cycling HIIT, or low-carbohydrate diet plus moderate continuous cycling. The HIIT protocol used 10 by 6-second all-out sprints with 9-second rests, 5 sessions per week, for only 50 minutes total training time across the intervention. Both exercise groups improved cardiorespiratory fitness while all groups lost more than 2.5 kg body weight. Affective valence and arousal were similar after HIIT and MICT, but PACES enjoyment scores favored MICT; the authors interpreted HIIT with low-carbohydrate dieting as time-efficient but more arduous and potentially less enjoyable.
